What is a Mexican Blue Palm...aka Brahea Armata?

Kevin Gregory with Mexican Blue Palms at our Pauma Valley Farm.

Native to Baja, California, the Mexican Blue Palms are known for its crown of distinctive blue-silver fronds that radiate from the top of the trunk. These palms have a slow growth rate and may grow up to 50ft (15m) and 16ft (4.9m) in width. They also produce long, pale yellow flowers that extend the leaf crown.

A rigid blue palm frond.

These palms flourish naturally in the rocky canyons and desert cliffs of northwestern Mexico at low to medium altitudes. They require little watering (occasional deep irrigation may be needed) making them drought-tolerant and perfect for xeriscaping.

From limestone alkaline soils like in their native soils of Baja, California to salty soils like those found in Florida, the Mexican Blue Palms can thrive in a range of soil types. The ideal soil type for optimal growth is a moist soil with good drainage and a slow release fertilizer.

While these unique palms make great decorative additions to any landscape, it's important to note that these fronds are rigid with spiny tips so it's advisable to avoid planting these palms close to sidewalks or near areas with high foot traffic.

With A Phoenix Reclinata

This striking palm. Phoenix Reclinata, also known as Senegal Date Palm, creates an interesting silhouette with its multiple gracefully-curved, often-reclining slender brown trunks and it's dense crowns of stiff but feathery leaf fronds. Old frond bases are medium brown and remain on the trunk, forming a showy trunk which is attractive all year long. A mature specimen can reach 35 feet in height with a 12 to 20-foot spread and creates a striking tree which casts a light shade. The palm is very elegant when lit from below at night. It's best used as an accent piece in large landscapes. The showy flower stalks are followed by one-inch-long bright orange dates which are incredibly showy and beautiful. These are especially attractive when viewed from a balcony above the tree. The fruits are edible and taste quite similar to the commercial date.

HI!

Is this a freak of nature or what? It's a single trunk Mediterranean Fan Palm that I found in the field. This is crazy because they are always multiple trunk.

Why is this a good palm? This single trunk is normally fatter with more frond leaves and is definitely a specimen palm. A very rare palm. If you don't want your palm to multiply, this might be just the answer.

Did we do anything differently? Nope, we didn't even plant it. It was a bird or the wind that blew this seed in. Over the years, it grew on its own, requiring very little water in fact!

Is it a freak of nature? No, it's the magic of nature!
