What is a Mexican Blue Palm...aka Brahea Armata?

Kevin Gregory with Mexican Blue Palms at our Pauma Valley Farm.

Native to Baja, California, the Mexican Blue Palms are known for its crown of distinctive blue-silver fronds that radiate from the top of the trunk. These palms have a slow growth rate and may grow up to 50ft (15m) and 16ft (4.9m) in width. They also produce long, pale yellow flowers that extend the leaf crown.

These palms flourish naturally in the rocky canyons and desert cliffs of northwestern Mexico at low to medium altitudes. They require little watering (occasional deep irrigation may be needed) making them drought-tolerant and perfect for xeriscaping.

From limestone alkaline soils like in their native soils of Baja, California to salty soils like those found in Florida, the Mexican Blue Palms can thrive in a range of soil types. The ideal soil type for optimal growth is a moist soil with good drainage and a slow release fertilizer. 

While these unique palms make great decorative additions to any landscape, it's important to note that these fronds are rigid with spiny tips so it's advisable to avoid planting  these palms close to sidewalks or near areas with high foot traffic.

WE HAVE SPECIMEN MEDITERANEAN FAN PALMS! BIG ONES!!

The Mediteranean Fan Palm is a clumping palm tree, growing slowly to 20 feet high, trunks 4 to 5 inches in diameter, covered with fibrous dead leaf petioles; triangular, fan-shaped blue-grey to green leaves 36 to 48 inches long and wide with spiny petioles. It is a shrub-like clumping palm, with several stems growing from a single base. The stems grow slowly and often tightly together, eventually reaching 16-20 feet tall with a trunk diameter of 4-5 inches. It is a fan palm, with the leaves a long petiole terminating in a rounded fan of 10-20 leaflets; each leaf is up to 3-4 feet long, with the leaflets 1 - 2 feet long. It also has numerous sharp needle-like spines produced on the leaf stems; these protect the stem growing point from browsing animals. The flowers are born in dense, short clusters at the top of the stems; it is usually (but not invariably) dioecious with male and female flowers on separate plants. The fruit is a brown drupe 1/2 - 3/4 inches long. Mediterranean Fan Palm Characteristics Stem/Trunk: Attractive trunk with age, fuzzy material between stubs of cut fronds Exposure: Full to partial sun Soil: Amended uniform Water: Regular, deep soaking 2 times per month during growing season Growth Rate: 5-15 ft, spread (crown) 5-20 ft; very slow growth rate (requires 10-15 years to achieve 8ft)

What is a B and B?

The technical definition is Root Ball and Bag... B and B is easier!

Instead of using a box for a new palm, we wrap the root ball with plastic! 

WHY?

It's for a quick installation but it also keeps the palm tree hydrated. 

We will provide an installation guide for proper handling.

Just for your information, it makes the tree lighter and in my opinion, easier to handle.

If you are like me, when I see a giant Canary Island Date Palms towering over parking lots and accenting homes throughout California and often wonder, what does something like weigh?

We have spectacular Canary Palms and other palms
I know you have a busy life and the weight of a palm tree might not be the first question you have in the morning. However, if you see these magnificent trees in person, I am sure that question might be there somewhere.  

I asked the man that knows it all... Kevin Gregory. This Canary (that I named Ralph) weighs 16,000 pounds... it's a 16 footer so basically a 1,000 pounds a foot.  

WHY IS THIS EVEN IMPORTANT? Who ever is working with a giant Canary Palm, the weight is important! What equipment is needed? What is the reach for installation? How the reach and weight calibrates the size crane... and more.

A thousand pounds a foot is a smart calculation for any Canary Island Date Palm. Refer to this calculation when considering the location of one of these magnificent trees! CRANE IS A MUST.

I was at a customer's home in Tustin that had a huge Canary Island Palm Tree.The tree was growing on the property line between two homes. One of the neighbors hated it, the other was in love. They asked us to come out and help them with a solution. The customer noted that  another company came out earlier that day and told them that they would remove the tree with 30 men. I did a serious eye roll on that one.

Over  16,000 pounds?  There isn't enough men to move that palm tree.  

The palm tree was removed and the feud ended peacefully. We planted a smaller, younger Canary Island Date palm in  better location so  this customer can enjoy the palm once more.

I personally love the Pigmy Palm, (Phoenix roebelenii). It makes a perfect indoor or outdoor palm and has beautiful soft feather like fronds. The Pigmy has moderate drought resistance and looks so tropical in planters or by the pool. If you are looking for a smallish, no mess, low maintenance palm the Pigmy is perfect.

We are often asked how old a palm tree is. It's really fascinating because some palms are super slow growers while others are faster.

Take for example the Canary Island Date palm, pictured below.

To grow this Canary to 22 foot of heigth, it took 35 years!

Just think what you were doing 35 years ago. What an investment. 

Did you see the Canary Palms in Beverly Hills? They are over 60 years old. 

So, before you start whining about the price of these incredible palms, 

remember, it took decades to grow! And you get to enjoy the splendour of these one of a kind beauties.

King Palms! These palms grow a foot and a half to two feet a year!

If you are looking at this 22' king palm? It has been growing for 11 years plus!

If you are looking for a really slow grower, the best is either the  Sable or Chilean Wine Palm. 

Here is a baby Chilean Wine Palm (as in tasty Wine!) that has been growing from seed for 10 years!

They are robust, thick trunk with fronds that are stiff and gorgeous. 

We have a 20' Chilean Wine Palm at the farm and that Palm has been growing for over 50 years!

Great Palm!

Here is the other slow growing palm, the Sabal Palmetto!

This beauty is 15' tall and has been growing at the farm for over 25 years.

The Sabal is a magnificent palm with a fan  type fronds. 

It is strong and textured for an amazing accent to any landscape.
