Windmill Palm- Trachycarpus Fortunei The Windmill palm makes a great accent which fits well into small areas like courtyards and entries. It is a tough plant and survives in both hot & cold urban landscapes and even thrives in Northern California and Washington climates. Windmill palm is perfect for containers if care is taken that they are well drained. It is very attractive planted in groves and groupings especially when plants of different heights are staggered in irregular patterns. Hey everyone! In this hot summer heat make sure to keep those palm trees watered! Whether it be by sprinker, drip, or hose watering make sure they are getting enough with all this heat!
A watered palm is a happy palm :)

Use Drip lines to hydrate your palm trees instead of the standard sprinkler system.

If you have automatic drip or sprinkler lines, be sure to check these pipes/hoes at least once a month, Or have your landscaper.

What is B and B in the palm and tree world? It means BAG and BALL. 

Okay, so what does that mean? 

If there are very large trees, normally, in transplanting it is easier and safer if the trees are wrapped in plastic or burlap when they are dug.  When we Bag them,  the earth is damp and it preserves the moisture during transportation and planting. It is also actually easier to manoeuvre around planters or buildings to the hole. 

Originally, the bag was a burlap type and burried to decompose. Now, we use plastic to protect the moisture and roots. 

 We have sent many B and B palms to South Carolina and it's easier on the other end to remove them from the trucks. 

The big specimens in boxes, they have to be gigantic boxes. are expensive which translates into more cost for the customer. And, it is better for them to root a bit in the boxes for  awhile. The problem with many boxed specimen is this; Craning them up can rip their roots sending the tree or palm into distress. Many boxed trees have established root systems through the bottom of the boxes. 

Digging, wrapping and out is a better and more successful process in transplanting.

THE CRANE'S MONEY CLOCK STARTS WHEN IT LEAVES THE YARD, AND 

ENDS WHEN IT RETURNS!!!

TO LIFT THIS CANARY UP AND OVER CHRIS' HOME, IT TOOK A 160 TON CRANE, A SECONDARY "DOLLY" (TRUCK TRAILER),

WITH A BOOM STRETCH OF 160 FEET.

WHY THE EXTRA TRAILER? 

THE TAILER WAS THE 80,000 POUND COUNTER WEIGHT SO THE CRANE WOULDN'T FLIP OVER WITH THE WEIGHT OF THE PALM TREE.

ALL IN ALL, IT TOOK THE CRANE, THE DOLLY,  THE TRAILER AND THE SECONDARY SEMI FOR THIS JOB!

We are often asked how old a palm tree is. It's really fascinating because some palms are super slow growers while others are faster.

Take for example the Canary Island Date palm, pictured below.

To grow this Canary to 22 foot of heigth, it took 35 years!

Just think what you were doing 35 years ago. What an investment. 

Did you see the Canary Palms in Beverly Hills? They are over 60 years old. 

So, before you start whining about the price of these incredible palms, 

remember, it took decades to grow! And you get to enjoy the splendour of these one of a kind beauties.

King Palms! These palms grow a foot and a half to two feet a year!

If you are looking at this 22' king palm? It has been growing for 11 years plus!

If you are looking for a really slow grower, the best is either the  Sable or Chilean Wine Palm. 

Here is a baby Chilean Wine Palm (as in tasty Wine!) that has been growing from seed for 10 years!

They are robust, thick trunk with fronds that are stiff and gorgeous. 

We have a 20' Chilean Wine Palm at the farm and that Palm has been growing for over 50 years!

Here is the other slow growing palm, the Sabal Palmetto!

This beauty is 15' tall and has been growing at the farm for over 25 years.

The Sabal is a magnificent palm with a fan  type fronds.

Sometimes, Canary Palm owners prefer to have the more natural trunk design rather than the trimmed or skinned trunk design. The problem is, after time the fronds will fall off and the trunks look spotted or junky. Here, you can see that if you wait long enough, the fronds simply pull off! It's okay for a while, but then moisture could get in and damage the tree. Do yourself and your Canary Island Date Palm a favor, trim your palm.
