This popular, elegant, and fast-growing palm from southern and eastern Australia has grass green leaves, a slim trunk, and a long, smooth crownshaft. Kentia Palms, one of the most elegant of the palms. Perfect for Southern California. Can adapt to full sun or be grown in partial sun. Great when grouped as two to five plants. A very graceful, solitary, medium sized palm, with a dark green ringed trunk, to about 10m tall. It has beautifully drooping, dark green leaflets, and a brown hessian like thatch around the leaf bases. Kentia Palm Characteristics Stem/Trunk: The trunk is swollen at the base and has slightly raised annular trunk rings. Exposure: Grow best in 35%-80% of full sunlight, tolerating direct sun only after about five years old. Today I was walking around the farm and the Blue Hesper palm caught my eye! This palm is a famously hardy blue palm from Mexico. These little beauties are a wonderful accent to any landscape. They are slow growing and easy to maintain. They have a nice full head of Blueish colored fan leaves and are perfect for our Southern California environment. They can be planted in a sunny spot in the garden or even partial shade, however, a well drained soil is a must! The palm can withstand -10 degree Celsius winters when mature and even droughts!

Windmill Palm- Trachycarpus Fortunei

The Windmill palm makes a great accent which fits well into small areas like courtyards and entries. It is a tough plant and survives in both hot & cold urban landscapes and even thrives in Northern California and Washington climates.

Windmill palm is perfect for containers if care is taken that they are well drained. It is very attractive planted in groves and groupings especially when plants of different heights are staggered in irregular patterns.

Windmill Palm Characteristics

Stem/Trunk: Single stem that is 8-10" in diameter.Trunks are usually covered with a loose mat of coarse gray or brown fiber.

Exposure: Partial shade is best, also cold hardy

Soil: Well drained soil
Water: Adequate moisture makes for rapid growth and best appearance but it is amazingly drought tolerant

Growth Rate: Moderate - 30'-40' height

Today the guys went out to an old customer's house and examined some trees. The palms were still tied up because of pool scapes and other hardscapes going in at the time and were ready to be opened!
The palms hadn't had one problem! They untied the palm leaves and saw beautiful full heads of green.
