Fishtail palms Royal palm
These palms shown above, do very well here in California and love the heat! Royal palms are tropical from Hawaii and Cuba, they have a large caliper trunk almost like a bottle palm and lush green feathery leaves. The other palm is the Giant Fishtail from Thailand, these are hardy and can take some heat. The leaves are rigid and most evergreen with the little fishtail like leaves on the frowns.

Windmill Palm- Trachycarpus Fortunei
The Windmill palm makes a great accent which fits well into small areas like courtyards and entries. It is a tough plant and survives in both hot & cold urban landscapes and even thrives in Northern California and Washington climates.
Windmill palm is perfect for containers if care is taken that they are well drained. It is very attractive planted in groves and groupings especially when plants of different heights are staggered in irregular patterns.
Windmill Palm Characteristics
Stem/Trunk: Single stem that is 8-10" in diameter.Trunks are usually covered with a loose mat of coarse gray or brown fiber.
Exposure: Partial shade is best, also cold hardy
Soil: Well drained soil Water: Adequate moisture makes for rapid growth and best appearance but it is amazingly drought tolerant

Today I was walking around the farm and the Blue Hesper palm caught my eye! This palm is a famously hardy blue palm from Mexico. These little beauties are a wonderful accent to any landscape. They are slow growing and easy to maintain. They have a nice full head of Blueish colored fan leaves and are perfect for our Southern California environment. They can be planted in a sunny spot in the garden or even partial shade, however, a well drained soil is a must! The palm can withstand -10 degree Celsius winters when mature and even droughts!

Today the guys went out to an old customer's house and examined some trees. The palms were still tied up because of pool scapes and other hardscapes going in at the time and were ready to be opened! The palms hadn't had one problem! They untied the palm leaves and saw beautiful full heads of green. Palms are tropical and hardy, they do love water and sun but can withstand the colder months as well. It doesn't take much to keep your palms looking healthy. Just some good old TLC and some vitamins to keep them nice and green!
