We were called out to remove a dying Canary palm in Newport Coast. The customer was sure it was fusarium Wilt.
IT WASN'T.
After digging half the morning to start the removal process, 8 feet down was a broken sprinkler pipe. This beautiful tree had been sitting in putrid water for who knows how long. The water had pooled not draining properly. If the tree had air pipes, this disaster could have been saved.
The slow agonising death of this Canary Palm was from neglect. Each Palm tells a story. They tell you what is wrong. NOT all dying Canary Palms are from Fusarium Wilt. It seems like a catch phrase.
Just a suggestion, before you diagnose the cause, it would have paid to do a little bit of investigation. This 18' premium Canary Island Date Palm didn't have to die.
Previously, we talked about how to separate and transplant a sago pup. This is a good time to go over how to properly care for your sago palm. The symmetry of the glossy fronds and the way the zig-zag pattern on the trunk gives it a prehistoric vibe with a tropical twist. They are also so versatile! They not only look good outdoors as decorations for entryways but they also make excellent indoor plants as well due to their slow-growth rate.
Here are some tips below for properly caring for your indoor cycad.

Looking for a double headed sago as a focal point to your landscape... we have them!
Looking for matching sagos for a big job... we have them.
Looking to add diversity indoor... we have them.
Care tips for indoor sago palms:
Give it just the right amount of sun. The key to your sago thriving both indoors (and outdoors!) is how much light it receives. Too much direct sun can burn those pretty green fronds. Partial sun is ideal. I also recommended turning the sago a quarter of a turn every couple of days to make sure the fronds each get their turn in the sun, allowing for them to grow out more evenly.
Keep it out of high traffic areas! This is beneficial for both you and the sago. The fronds are pretty stiff with a sharp point at the end of the frond. You will get tired super quick after a few brushes with its leaves.
Watching the watering. Too much water, and your sago will have some rot issues. Only water your sago again when the soil is starting to feel dry. Also, make sure it has good drainage and remove any sitting, leftover water after each watering.
Fertilize once a month during growing season (spring through fall). Be mindful not to over fertilize your plant as this could result in fertilizer burn, causing yellowing and root damage.
To prune or not to prune? Trimming your sago's fronds is completely up to you and your personal taste. The cone that grows from the center can be removed as long as its done carefully. Otherwise, if left alone, will just fall off on its own.
Upgrade to a pot 2 inches bigger than the one it's currently in. When the sago begins to outgrow the pot it's in, it's time to move it to a bigger home. Again, make sure that there is good drainage to prevent rot.
***They are not good for dogs. Keep your pet away from a Sago Palm.
Fun Fact: The Chamaerops humillis aka the Mediterranean Fan Palm is native to Europe. The work Chamaerops comes from the Greek!
The Mediteranean Fan Palm is a clumping palm tree, growing slowly to 20 feet high, trunks 4 to 5 inches in diameter , covered with fibrous dead leaf petioles; triangular, fan-shaped blue-grey to green leaves 36 to 48 inches long and wide with spiny petioles
It is a shrub-like clumping palm, with several stems growing from a single base. The stems grow slowly and often tightly together, eventually reaching 16-20 feet tall with a trunk diameter of 4-5 inches.
It is a fan palm, with the leaves with a long petiole terminating in a rounded fan of 10-20 leaflets; each leaf is up to 3-4 feet long, with the leaflets 1 - 2 feet long. It also has numerous sharp needle-like spines produced on the leaf stems; these protect the stem growing point from browsing animals. The flowers are born in dense, short clusters at the top of the stems; it is usually (but not invariably) dioecious with male and female flowers on separate plants. The fruit is a brown drupe 1/2 - 3/4 inches long. Mediterranean Fan Palm Characteristics Stem/Trunk: Attractive trunk with age, fuzzy material between stubs of cut fronds Exposure: Full to partial sun Soil: Amended uniform Water: Regular, deep soaking 2 times per month during growing season Growth Rate: 5-15 ft, spread (crown) 5-20 ft; very slow growth rate (requires 10-15 years to achieve 8ft)
