Well its that time of year when the palms are growing happily and loosing those old leaves from last season! 

If you are a homeowner or landscaper and have plans of trimming the palms, here is some valuable advice.  

Most palm trees shed their fronds naturally to let you know it is time to trim! 

The Canary Island Date Palm should only be  pruned when the fronds hang below a line parallel to the ground. USE A NEW OR VERY CLEAN CHAIN SAW (ONE THAT HAS BEEN SPRAYED AND WIPED WITH BLEACH) DON'T EVER USE A CHAIN SAW THAT HAS BEEN OPERATED ON OTHER PALM TREES... That is a disaster waiting to happen.

If the Palm pruning is done incorrectly, the palms will lose their vigor causing it to attract and transmit diseases, reduce the nutritional health of the tree, affect its natural cold hardiness and lower its tolerance to wind. That is why a Gregory Palm Farm Maintenance program is so important!! em>

Windmill Palm-Trachycarpus Fortunei - GREAT Northern California TREES TOO!

The Windmill palm makes a great accent which fits well into small areas like courtyards and entries. It is a tough plant and survives in both hot & cold urban landscapes and even thrives in Northern California and Washington climates.

Windmill palm is perfect for containers if care is taken that they are well drained. It is very attractive planted in groves and groupings especially when plants of different heights are staggered in irregular patterns.

Windmill Palm Characteristics

Stem/Trunk: Single stem that is 8-10" in diameter.Trunks are usually covered with a loose mat of coarse gray or brown fiber.

Exposure: Partial shade is best, also cold hardy

Soil: Well drained soil
Water: Adequate moisture makes for rapid growth and best appearance but it is amazingly drought tolerant

Growth Rate: Moderate - 30'-40' height
