Well the warm seasons definitely remind us why we live in southern California! The palm trees are loving it and seem to be growing like weeds!!

Just the other day I went to measure our 'Caryota Gigas' (giant fishtail palm) and they had grown almost two feet from last year! The tallest one is 8 feet already!

Its amazing what a little water, fertilizer, sun and a little bit of TLC really does for our trees.

I have had a few inquiries about the Windmill Palm...aka Trachycarpus fortunei!

I call them our "hairy" palms. Why? They have a hairy-type trunk. It insulates them from the extreme hot and cold. They are an unusual palm with a "windmill" type head.

WHAT DO YOU DO WITH A GIANT ROOT BALL? GREGORY PALM FARMS 714-814-8525

We dug this dead Canary out of a Newport Coast Customer's front yard! What we have is a 8'X4'root ball...giant! When they were digging it and pulling it out, the root system just kept going!

At the bottom of the hole, water, putrid water, sitting there! The poor Canary Island Date palm drowned!

There was a broken sprinkler pipe and for probably 6 to 9 months, the water poured into the hole and sat.

What do we do with this giant root ball now? Normally, it would go to a landfill somewhere. We decided to bring it back to the farm. The landscaper was sure the tree was dying from Fusarium Wilt, it wasn't.

What's next?

What is the weight of just the root ball... 8,000 pounds

DEAD CANARY IN NEWPORT COAST! WHAT KILLED IT? GREGORY PALM FARMS 714-814-8525

We were called out to remove a dying Canary palm in Newport Coast. The customer was sure it was fusarium Wilt.

IT WASN'T.

After digging half the morning to start the removal process, 8 feet down was a broken sprinkler pipe. This beautiful tree had been sitting in putrid water for who knows how long. The water was constant and was not draining.

Just a suggestion, before you diagnose the cause, it would have paid to do a little bit of investigation. This 18' premium Canary Island Date Palm didn't have to die.

The World's Tallest Palms Still Vulnerable to Extinction Despite Efforts to Protect Them! Gregory Palm Farms 714)814-8525 Another wonder of the world.

Growing along the deep valleys of the Andean mountains are some of the most remarkable palms on the planet, the Quindio wax palm (Ceroxylon quindiuense). These spectacular trees are the tallest species of wax palms, clocking in at anywhere from 150ft to 200ft tall! For over 200 years, people have travelled from all over the world just to see these towering skyscrapers of Mother Nature.

Not only is the wax palm home to many exotic creatures including the endangered yellow-eared parrot, it also provides an abundance of resources. Unfortunately, it is because of this exact resourcefulness, the wax palm is vulnerable to extinction.

Dating back to the first written accounts of the Catholic ceremony, Palm Sunday, celebrants have been making religious ornaments from young wax palms. The harvesting of these leaves result in the palm's death which has caused a considerable threat to the wax palm numbers.

Other contributing factors to the decline in numbers were due to parts of the palm being used by locals to build housing and water supply systems. The palm's waxy trunk was also harvested to make candles before electricity became the primary energy source in households.

Thankfully, in 1986 the Colombian government intervened and named the Quindio wax palm as the country's national tree. It is through this decree that the government passed legislation to assign funding for the creation of reserves, allowing the palms to grow in their natural habitat.

Sadly, despite these efforts to preserve their numbers, these palms are still vulnerable to extinction. Diseases caused by beetles and fungi have also resulted in a large number of wax palm deaths. A study conducted in 1991 showed that as many 80% of the palms in the Quindio Pass were affected.
