A Triangle palm archway at our Pauma Valley farm.

Cultivated and grown in a variety of climates throughout the world, the Triangle Palm in its native Madagascar habitat, is actually considered a vulnerable species according to the IUCN's Red List. The IUCN, short for International Union for Conservation for Nature and Natural Resources, has the world's most comprehensive inventory of global conservation status of biological species. Using specific criteria, the Red List assesses the extinction risk for thousands of species and subspecies. 

With an estimate of only 1,000 mature trees left in a small area in southern Madagascar hence the Vulnerable status on the Red List. The palms are threatened by the harvesting of their seeds and leaves.

The triangle palm gets its name from the distinct triangle shape that is formed by the base of its fronds. In its native habitat, the palm has been known to grow up to 50ft. However, palms cultivated and grown outside of Madagascar, rarely reach that height and are more commonly known to grow to about 10ft-15ft. They thrive best with full sun exposure, regular watering, and well-drained sandy soil. The leaves are a beautiful blue-green color, making the palm a great decorative and accent palm.

We here at Gregory Palm Farms want to make sure your palms are doing well while saving water!

Let's start!

If your trees are watered by a sprinkler system, you are wasting water.

If you are watering your tree with a hose on full, you are wasting water.

If you are overhead watering, you are wasting water.

If you are flooding palms, you are wasting water.

So, what's the solution?

DRIP SYSTEM!  It's the black hose system that the water is directed at the root base of the tree. Most individual drip applicators are 2 gallons of water per hour. It might sound like a lot! It's actually not and there is no waste!

The drips should be placed on the tree in a circular fashion with three drip applicators. When you turn on your water, it is even better with a timer, leave it on for 30 to 45 minutes. You can water every day or every other day. The water in this system drips and drips, like an old Chinese torture, making the water seep deep into the ground hydrating the roots. You save water while getting the water to the ROOTS. SAVING WATER AND SAVING MONEY.

Bacon-Wrapped Dates Stuffed with Cream Cheese & Almonds

Ingredients 

18 (1 by 1/4-inch) pieces cream cheese

18 pitted dates (preferably Medjool)

18 salted and roasted whole almonds

6 slices bacon cut crosswise into thirds

Special equipment: 18 wooden picks

Directions

Heat the oven to 400 degrees F.

Stuff 1 piece of cheese and 1 almond into each date, then wrap one piece of bacon around each date and secure bacon with a toothpick if desired. Arrange dates, bacon seam down and 1 inch apart in a shallow baking pan.

Bake 5 minutes, then turn dates over with tongs and bake until bacon is crisp, 5 to 6 minutes more. Drain on a paper towel or parchment. Serve immediately.
