We were in Mission Viejo yesterday for an installation.

The obstacles were many!

 Between the narrow entrance to the back yard, the plumbing/irrigation holes/trenches, 

the cement work for the pool and the plain ole access, made this job tougher and bit more stressful.

This is the tiny access we had to bring a 5,000 pound Phoenix Dactylifera Date palm

AND

the equipment that is needed for the planting. 

We managed to do it anyway!!!!

We got it in there and saved all the flatwork with layers of plywood and our technical equipment - ran by our awesomely talented driver, Kevin!

The owner, selling the property, had a crew "trim" the old Washingtonia Robustas and the communication lines got blurred. They CUT DOWN six palms to the ground.

You could only imagine the new owners dismay to find our their palms were gone!

So, Gregory Palm Farms got on the job and installed six beautiful Washingtonia Robustas to replace the ones they destroyed. 

 

How big is the root ball? The root ball has to be large for the ballast of the tree. Otherwise, they don't stand and thrive.

Sometimes, Canary Palm owners prefer to have the more natural trunk design rather than the trimmed or skinned trunk design. Today I was walking around the farm and the Blue Hesper palm caught my eye! This palm is a famously hardy blue palm from Mexico. These little beauties are a wonderful accent to any landscape. They are slow growing and easy to maintain. They have a nice full head of Blueish colored fan leaves and are perfect for our Southern California environment. They can be planted in a sunny spot in the garden or even partial shade, however, a well drained soil is a must! The palm can withstand -10 degree Celsius winters when mature and even droughts!

5th-generation Gregory Palms farmer enjoys the shade of the Pindo palm (aka the Jelly palm, aka Butia palm).

The effects of many years of drought is quite obvious. All one has to do is drive through any suburban neighborhood in Southern California and they will see dying lawn after dying lawn. Apartment complexes and businesses plazas have put up signs asking their residents and patrons to excuse the appearance of their landscape while they make an effort to adhere to the water conservation policies.

So is there a light at the end of this dry and parched tunnel?

The answer is sort of. While we may not be able to perform rain dances to summon a downpour of clear, liquid gold, we can ease the suffering on our landscapes.

Replacing grass lawns and yards with drought-tolerant plants and trees not only helps efforts with conserving water but also makes that walk to your front doorstep a lot less depressing! Instead of using grass to cover your lawn, opt for rock or wood chips with succulents and other drought-friendly plants. 

You can still have the luscious green yard without breaking the bank with water fines.

The Jelly palm (first picture above) is another great alternative for your lawn as it requires little watering. Its blue-green, recurved leaves will give any lawn a more exotic and island-like feel. It can withstand high temperatures as well as temperatures down to 10-degrees Fahrenheit.  It also produces a sweet/tart fruit that is great for making jellies and wine from.

Gregory Palms has been selected as the palm tree vendor of choice to install several large specimen Canary Island Palm trees,some large specimen Washingtonia's and a variety of other large palm trees including several Reclinata's. These trees are being installed in a large residential home in Yorba Linda. Due to the large size and number of specimen trees, this job will take several weeks to complete. Photos below show the various trees being shipped to the job site as well as some of the large Canary Island palm trees being moved to the back yard of the residence. A large crane is being used to move the trees from the truck to the location and then placed according to the architect's plans.

10 Surprising Facts about Palm Trees

1. There are over 2,500 species of palm trees. The Arecaceae family of plants includes wonderfully diverse species found throughout the world, from the desert to the rainforest. 

2. Not all palm trees are "trees," and not all plants called "palms" are truly palms. These evergreen plants can grow in the form of shrubs, trees or long, woody vines called lianas. Plants like the yucca palm, Torbay palm (pictured right), sago palm and traveler's palm are not part of the Arecaceae family.

3. Palm trees have two different types of leaves: palmate and pinnate. Palmate leaves, like hands, grow in a bunch at the end of a stem. Pinnate leaves are like feathers, growing all along either side of a stem. 

4. Palm trees are important religious symbols.  In the Bible, the people of Jerusalem greeted a triumphant Jesus just one week before his death and resurrection, a tradition now known and celebrated as Palm Sunday the week before Easter. Palms are mentioned dozens of times in both the Bible and the Quran. In Judaism, palms represent peace and plenty.

5. Lots of staples come from palm trees. Coconuts are an obvious product of palm trees, but did you know that dates, betel nuts and acai fruit all come from palm trees as well? Palm oil, as its name indicates, also comes from the fruit of the oil palm tree. 

6. Palm Trunks. Most Palms feature tall, cylindrical trunks that look very similar to a columns or pillars. In some types, the trunk includes hooked prickles, while others boast smooth trunks with very few markings.

7. The tallest palm tree can grow up to 197 feet tall! The Quindio wax palm (seen above), Colombia's national tree, is the tallest-growing species of palm. 

8. The coco de mer palm tree has the largest seeds of any plant on Earth. The seeds can be as large as 20 inches in diameter and as heavy as 66 pounds! 

9. Palm trees have a history with humans as old as the first societies. Archeological finds have shown that the date palm was commonly used in Mesopotamian society, for food and other purposes. Romans gave palm branches as a symbol of triumph to the triumphant champions of games and wars. 

10. Have you ever heard of palm wine? Yeah! Also called "kallu," palm wine is a common alcoholic spirit in regions of Asia and Africa. It can be created from coconut palms, date palms, the Chilean wine palm, and other species.

Good Morning All!

Gregory Palm Farms has many palms from the Phoenix Family including the Reclinata. This beautiful and unusual palm grows in huge clumps that can make a striking statement in the landscape.

Great for large yards, parks, campuses and other spacious areas. The Reclinata (Senegal) palm is particularly impressive displayed against large structures as backdrops where its gracefully curving stems are best appreciated. Makes a great potted specimen for the patio when young. This durable palm also thrives in large containers and other confined areas in urban landscapes.
