The Mediteranean Fan Palm is a clumping palm tree, growing slowly to 20 feet high, trunks 4 to 5 inches in diameter , covered with fibrous dead leaf petioles; triangular, fan-shaped blue-grey to green leaves 36 to 48 inches long and wide with spiny petioles It is a shrub-like clumping palm, with several stems growing from a single base. The stems grow slowly and often tightly together, eventually reaching 16-20 feet tall with a trunk diameter of 4-5 inches. It is a fan palm, with the leaves with a long petiole terminating in a rounded fan of 10-20 leaflets; each leaf is up to 3-4 feet long, with the leaflets 1 - 2 feet long. It also has numerous sharp needle-like spines produced on the leaf stems; these protect the stem growing point from browsing animals. The flowers are born in dense, short clusters at the top of the stems; it is usually (but not invariably) dioecious with male and female flowers on separate plants. The fruit is a brown drupe 1/2 - 3/4 inches long. Have you heard of the pony tail palm or Elephants foot palm? They are very slow growing, require very little water and make unique beautiful potted palms for indoors with the added benefit of natural air purification. Yes, palm plants help clean our air in our homes. Kentia Palms and pigmy palms also do great indoors given their slow growth rate. They thrive well with just indoor light and lower humidity. A Triangle palm archway at our Pauma Valley farm.

Cultivated and grown in a variety of climates throughout the world, the Triangle Palm in its native Madagascar habitat, is actually considered a vulnerable species according to the IUCN's Red List. The IUCN, short for International Union for Conservation for Nature and Natural Resources, has the world's most comprehensive inventory of global conservation status of biological species. Using specific criteria, the Red List assesses the extinction risk for thousands of species and subspecies. 

With an estimate of only 1,000 mature trees left in a small area in southern Madagascar hence the Vulnerable status on the Red List. The palms are threatened by the harvesting of their seeds and leaves.

The triangle palm gets its name from the distinct triangle shape that is formed by the base of its fronds. In its native habitat, the palm has been known to grow up to 50ft. However, palms cultivated and grown outside of Madagascar, rarely reach that height and are more commonly known to grow to about 10ft-15ft. They thrive best with full sun exposure, regular watering, and well-drained sandy soil. The leaves are a beautiful blue-green color, making the palm a great decorative and accent palm.

Did you know that Windmill palms actually prefer the shade verses too much sun? These are known for their super cold hardiness tolerating as low as 10 degrees Fahrenheit. They can be planted up the East coast as far as Virginia. They do great with salt spray and grow very slow, averaging less than 8 inches per year. They require very little pruning and stay compact making them great for containers if preferred. These palms are wonderful if you have a smaller yard or patio that you want to bring that tropical feeling too!
