Windmill Palm- Trachycarpus Fortunei The Windmill palm makes a great accent which fits well into small areas like courtyards and entries. It is a tough plant and survives in both hot & cold urban landscapes and even thrives in Northern California and Washington climates. Windmill palm is perfect for containers if care is taken that they are well drained. Today I was walking around the farm and the Blue Hesper palm caught my eye! This palm is a famously hardy blue palm from Mexico. These little beauties are a wonderful accent to any landscape. They are slow growing and easy to maintain. They have a nice full head of Blueish colored fan leaves and are perfect for our Southern California environment. They can be planted in a sunny spot in the garden or even partial shade, however, a well drained soil is a must! The palm can withstand -10 degree Celsius winters when mature and even droughts!

Some palms multiply on their own, such as the Phoenix Reclinata (shown above and below) or the Mediterranean Fan Palm. The palms you do not want to multiple is ANY Date palm. Those "pups' or "sucker" or "seedlings" will damage the trunk making it unsightly. 

 

What to do if your Date Palm starts shooting sprouts? Cut them out and toss them or plant them.
