With California being the Palm Capital, there are bound to be questions about these trees and their care.

In an effort to assist you, here are some answers...

"How tall does a Palm Tree grow?"

Each variety have different qualities of growth and depending on the water and soil conditions it will vary. Here is an approximation!

The Canary Island Date Palm...

Canaries are a large majestic palms, with a very solid trunk, and long feather leaves with spine petioles. Quite a popular plant due to its hardiness, attractiveness and speed of growth. We have them at the farm as tall as 45 feet but I have seen them up to 60 feet. Their circumference is anywhere between 6 to 9 feet.  They love full sun and a slow grower!

The King Palm....

The King Palm is very popular, elegant, and fast-growing palm from southern and eastern Australia has grass green leaves, a slim trunk, and a long, smooth crown shaft. An easy-to-grow plant suitable for cool temperate to tropical climates, or for indoors if given bright light. The King Palm is also self-cleaning, which makes maintaining a King very attractive. A medium grower! They are petite while young and develop the same way.

         The Queen Palm...

The Queen palms are a tall, medium trunk, straight tree reaching up to 50 feet tall, gracefully feathery top with a smooth trunk to 25', edible orange fruits. A fast grower! Their root system is pencil-like and can be planted easily in planters or side yards. These trees are so hardy! Great for a hammock too!!

The Phoenix Dactylifera...

Date Palms are probably the second most well-known palm after the coconut , this palm produces dates. However, despite this palm being extremely adaptable to differing growing conditions, from hot, dry deserts, to wet tropics, and thru to cold-temperate regions, it will only produce dates in the hot, dry climates. It is also very salt-tolerant, making it good for coastal planting. This Palm  is medium grower! . They are the favorite for the Anaheim area. The tricky part is maintaining the diamond cut trunk!

The Phoenix Roebelenii - Pygmy Date Palm...

The Pygmy Date Palm is a small stature, delicate lacy appearance and easy care make this an exceptional palm that everyone can enjoy whether outdoor or in indoor containers.
Pygmy date palm excels in containers of all kinds. Also looks great by patios and entry ways. Use clumps of these palms as specimens and to serve as focal point in a mass planting of annuals. Also nice combined with evergreen shrubs in a mixed hedge.

How to Care for Your King Palm? The Gregory palm farms will not disappoint! pick your king or any other palm you desire at the best prices…714-814-8525 or 760-975-4605!

King palms are a popular choice for homeowners throughout southern California. They are relatively low-maintenance, self cleaning and can bring a tropical vibe to any landscape. They are native to Australia and prefer warmer temperatures. They cannot tolerate anything below 28° Fahrenheit. To keep your king palm looking its best, I've provided some tips below.

  • Keep the soil moist! Compared to other palms, these babies require more water than most so make sure you don't let the soil try out. Obviously, you will find yourself watering more in the summer than in the winter.
  • Mix the soil up. Using a combination of both sand and soil will make your king palm the happiest. Use sand for the bottom of the planting site and a combination of sand and soil for the rest of the surrounding area.
  • Be careful when pruning. The king palm lacks the ability to heal itself and its for this reason that you must try to avoid pruning or removal of its flowers. Any cuts or damage to the tree leaves it vulnerable to fungus and diseases.
  • Fertilize your palm at least four times a year. Use a slow-release fertilizer that is formulated specifically for palms.
  • Watch for leaning. If you start notice that the palm is leaning more towards one side then its time to provide some extra support at the base. This can be accomplished by placing boards into the ground at its base and using bungee cords to set the palm upright. The boards can be removed once the tree is stronger and can support itself.

Interested in adding a king palm to your home or business? Come pick your palm with the Gregory Palm Farms! You wont be disappointed, and will love our prices! We have large specimens that have been growing for over 20 years too!

HOW TO CORRECTLY MEASURE A PALM TREE:

  1. BTH...BROWN TRUNK HEIGHT...This measurement is taken from ground base to to the base of the newest emerging spear.  BTH is the Nursery Standard Measurement and quite often the only term used when describing the size of a Palm. CTH: CLEAR TRUNK HEIGHT: This measurement is actually only the trunk height up to the pineapple of a canary or only the trunk height of the palm excluding any foliage.
  2. OVERALL HEIGHT- This distance includes everything to the fronds top. Watch those electric lines if applicable!
  3. ROOTBALL DIAMETER: This is important when considering where the palm is going to be located/planted. If the location is a planter, make sure there is room for growth. A canary is robust in stature and needs room to show off.
  4. ROOTBALL DEPTH: The depth is the dimension of how deep the hole must be to secure the tree plus drainage. When planting, clean washed sand is best and don't forget the air pipes.
  5. TRUNK CALLIPER: The trunk calliper is the circumference of the trunk - the measure all the way around. Some palms are wider than others. It is important that this calliper is noted for the best look. Canary Island Date Palms come in a variety of trunk widths. Each are unique and are an amazing accent to any landscape, a true statement.
  6. CANOPY DIAMETER: Canopy diameter is the width of the total frond top. This is important not only for the appearance of your palm, it is also crucial in its placement, having enough space for the full top and for the palm to grow.

HI!
LOOKING FOR AN UNUSUAL PALM WITH SWEEPING AND GRACEFUL FRONDS... IN A GREEN BLUE COLOR, A CORNER THAT NEEDS UPDATING?

Easy to grow with a striking appearance,
Triangle Palm excels for use in landscapes. With it's unique arrangement of blue green leaves gives a bold and formal appearance. It gets its name from the bulging leaf or frond bases that grow to form a distinct 3-sided triangle shape.

All of our Triangle Palms are field grown in the rich, fertile soil of the Pauma Valley in Northern San Diego County at the base of Mt. Palomar. The Pauma Valley farm is our largest growing location of palms, and these palms can weather conditions down to 20 degrees and handle snow from Mt. Palomar a few weeks out of the year.

With these varying temperatures, we can supply cold, hardy palm trees to the Northwestern and Southeast states.
