Windmill Palm- Trachycarpus Fortunei

The Windmill palm makes a great accent which fits well into small areas like courtyards and entries. It is a tough plant and survives in both hot & cold urban landscapes and even thrives in Northern California and Washington climates.

Windmill palm is perfect for containers if care is taken that they are well drained. It is very attractive planted in groves and groupings especially when plants of different heights are staggered in irregular patterns.

Windmill Palm Characteristics

Stem/Trunk: Single stem that is 8-10" in diameter.Trunks are usually covered with a loose mat of coarse gray or brown fiber.

Exposure: Partial shade is best, also cold hardy

Soil: Well drained soil
Water: Adequate moisture makes for rapid growth and best appearance but it is amazingly drought tolerant

Growth Rate: Moderate - 30'-40' height

Yesterday, a wonderful client from Long Beach came in to look at some King palms and ended up with something totally different. She was looking for something with a rich green color, like an evergreen. Some of the more tropical palms that she initially liked werent as vibrant as she thought, mainly beacuse of the hot summer weathering the palms.

We took a walk around the entire farm, scounting and searching for what she invisioned. The palms that caught her eye was the Mediteranean fan, Mexican, and the Sago. Other palms that stay evergreen are the Canary Island date palm, Reclinata palm, and the Pygmy date palm.

The Sago palm won her over and she was so excited for her new palms. She went with this Specimen Sago palm and another smaller sago. These palms are going to liven up the yard and give it a fresh new look!

Today the guys went out to an old customer's house and examined some trees. The palms were still tied up because of pool scapes and other hardscapes going in at the time and were ready to be opened!
The palms hadn't had one problem! They untied the palm leaves and saw beautiful full heads of green.

The install had to go through a front driveway, under the carport, around the garage, through the side yard and out the back.  AND with only barely inches between the equipment and the wall or carport. We strive to complete any installation; difficult or easy with fineness.

This installation will take several weeks to complete due to the large complex design. Canary Island Date Palms are a large majestic palm, with a very solid trunk, and long feather leaves with spined petioles. Quite a popular plant due to its hardiness, attractiveness and speed of growth. Very good for adding a Mediterranean feel. Canary Island Date Palms have a single, wide heavy trunk with characteristic leaf diamonds on the trunk. dark brown. These trees are tolerant of most well drained soils and require moderate amounts of water for proper growth. They will survive in full sun, wind, heat, aridity and cold. Canary Island Date Palms have a slow to moderate growth rate and can reach over 60' in height with a 30 - 50' spread.
