We are busy on the farm pulling and wrapping these Jelly Palms root balls and preparing a large order for delivery. Jelly Palms and Mediterranean Fan Palms are drought tolerant and very hardy. They are one of the most cold tolerant palms and are great in temperate climates. They love full sun and are great for patios and planters! They require minimal maintenance and cleanup! We love our Date palms! These littler ones pictured here are 15 gallon but they make perfect pretty potted indoor plants and do grow to be much bigger for smaller outdoor spaces! Cool little fun fact about Date palms is Pygmy Dates, the Senegal Date Palm and the Phoenix Dactylifera Date palm all produce edible dates! Yes the smaller dates are more bitter and not so palatable like the Phoenix Dates but they are edible!
What is B and B in the palm and tree world? It means BAG and BALL.
Okay, so what does that mean?
If there are very large trees, normally, in transplanting it is easier and safer if the trees are wrapped in plastic or burlap when they are dug. When we Bag them, the earth is damp and it preserves the moisture during transportation and planting. It is also actually easier to manoeuvre around planters or buildings to the hole.
Originally, the bag was a burlap type and burried to decompose. Now, we use plastic to protect the moisture and roots.
We have sent many B and B palms to South Carolina and it's easier on the other end to remove them from the trucks.
The big specimens in boxes, they have to be gigantic boxes. are expensive which translates into more cost for the customer. And, it is better for them to root a bit in the boxes for awhile. The problem with many boxed specimen is this; Craning them up can rip their roots sending the tree or palm into distress. Many boxed trees have established root systems through the bottom of the boxes.
Digging, wrapping and out is a better and more successful process in transplanting.

We were in Yorba Linda this morning checking on the customer's Canary Palms!
They are gorgeous!
A neighbor came up and asked about palms. He said, "Looking at these palms makes my landscape Dull!"
I told him that we can change that! And, if the budget was a concern, smaller Canary Palm trees might just do the trick as well as mixing them with other palms; such as Washingtonia Robustas or Queen or King Palms!
Their block just might be getting better and better!
