How to tell if your Sago Palm is male or female? If it grows a long and protruding pod from the center. After the member grows out, the top of the head of the sago actually splits and begins to grow two heads. The females grow a dense circular seed pot with hundreds or thousands of seeds.
It's actually quite remarkable! What do you have?

What is B and B in the palm and tree world? It means BAG and BALL.
Okay, so what does that mean?
If there are very large trees, normally, in transplanting it is easier and safer if the trees are wrapped in plastic or burlap when they are dug. When we Bag them, the earth is damp and it preserves the moisture during transportation and planting. It is also actually easier to manoeuvre around planters or buildings to the hole.
Originally, the bag was a burlap type and burried to decompose. Now, we use plastic to protect the moisture and roots.
We have sent many B and B palms to South Carolina and it's easier on the other end to remove them from the trucks.
The big specimens in boxes, they have to be gigantic boxes. are expensive which translates into more cost for the customer. And, it is better for them to root a bit in the boxes for awhile. The problem with many boxed specimen is this; Craning them up can rip their roots sending the tree or palm into distress. Many boxed trees have established root systems through the bottom of the boxes.
Digging, wrapping and out is a better and more successful process in transplanting.

The Cycas Revoluta, or commonly known as the Sago Palm, is a wonderful plant for both indoor and outdoor use. It looks great in the shrub border or as an accent on an expanse of lawn or near the patio. Use in entryways or in rock and sand gardens.
It mixes well with palms and combines well with border grass, podocarpus and camellias. The Sago Palm makes an excellent container plant for use outdoors and in the home. The Sago Palm tall trunk on older specimens, grows 8-10in diameter. It is more fern-like when small and produces offsets at base.
It grows in full sun or partial shade and require a well prepared, non-alkaline soil with good drainage.Once established, the Sago Palm is fairly drought tolerant, but still requires regular watering. The Sago Palm is a slow growing palm with up to 10 ft fronds spread 3-6 ft.
We have many sizes of Sago Palms from single trunk to multi-trunks specimens.Call us today if you would like to install some Sago Palm trees from Gregory Palm Farms to enhance the beauty and value of your home. (714) 814-8525 or (760)975-4605 http://gregorypalmfarms.com
What kind of Palm Trees grow in Southern California?
JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING! Seriously, we have the best climate for palms. To get even more technical, the mountain areas, where snow is plentiful in the wintertime, is not conducive to most palms. However, the Butia Capitata aka Jelly Palm, the Windmill Palm aka trachycarpus fortune or the Mexican Blue Fan Palm would survive and actually thrive. For example, we installed over 100 Brahea Armata/Mexican Blue Fan Palms in Las Vegas. From time to time, Las Vegas gets snow so the Mexican Fan Palm was a perfect choice.
Ideally, the lower elevations are better for most palms.
One could consider the Canary Island Date Palm or any Date Palms such as Medjool, Phoenix Dactylifera or Macho Date Palms are lovely. The King palms that are self cleaning (oh yeah! Self cleaning) are perfect around pools or planters because of their slender trunks and soft sweeping fronds. The Triangle is a wonderful choice with its triangular trunk and fronds in bluish green hues. Or, if you are looking for easy growing with a pow statement, the multiple trunk Queens are gorgeous! Their canopy creates shade and are easy to grow! There is always the Washingtonia Robusta palms that are strong as nails, easy to grow and are impressive planted in groups or as a linear accent.
If you live along the coastal areas, kentia palms and king palms do well. They love the moisture.
What ever kind of palm you would like, get the education from Gregory Palm Farms before your purchase. It can make a difference in the success of your landscape for years to come!
