HI!
What kind of Palm Trees grow in Southern California?
JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING! Seriously, we have the best climate for palms. To get even more technical, the mountain areas, where snow is plentiful in the wintertime, is not conducive to most palms. However, the Butia Capitata aka Jelly Palm, the Windmill Palm aka trachycarpus fortune or the Mexican Blue Fan Palm would survive and actually thrive. For example, we installed over 100 Brahea Armata/Mexican Blue Fan Palms in Las Vegas. From time to time, Las Vegas gets snow so the Mexican Fan Palm was a perfect choice.
Ideally, the lower elevations are better for most palms.
One could consider the Canary Island Date Palm or any Date Palms such as Medjool, Phoenix Dactylifera or Macho Date Palms are lovely. The King palms that are self cleaning (oh yeah! Self cleaning) are perfect around pools or planters because of their slender trunks and soft sweeping fronds. The Triangle is a wonderful choice with its triangular trunk and fronds in bluish green hues. Or, if you are looking for easy growing with a pow statement, the multiple trunk Queens are gorgeous! Their canopy creates shade and are easy to grow! There is always the Washingtonia Robusta palms that are strong as nails, easy to grow and are impressive planted in groups or as a linear accent.
If you live along the coastal areas, kentia palms and king palms do well. They love the moisture.
What ever kind of palm you would like, get the education from Gregory Palm Farms before your purchase. It can make a difference in the success of your landscape for years to come!
