Washingtonia Filifera- The only native palm to California! AVAILABLE AT Gregory Palm Farms WHERE THE PALMS GROW HAPPY! FULL SERVICE FROM DELIVERY TO INSTALLATION

Hi:
Here we have the California Fan Palm that grows so nicely and slowly in our native state.
A great palm tree that requires little water.

California Desert Fan Palm
Washingtonia Filifera

If you close your eyes and imagine a typical Southern California landscape, chances are that you've pictured at least one palm tree, if not several, rising from the ground. But despite the diversity and ubiquity of palms in the Los Angeles area, only one species—Washingtonia filifera, the California fan palm—is native to California. All of L.A.'s other palm species, from the slender Mexican fan palms that line so many L.A. boulevards to the feather-topped Canary Island date palm, have been imported.

Range

Occur naturally in desert oases in isolated areas of the Sonoran and Mojave deserts of southeastern California, southwestern Arizona, and northern Baja California, Mexico, at elevations between 500 and 1,000 feet. Widely cultivated as an ornamental in Southern California.

Habitat

Moist soils along alkaline streams and in mountain canyons.

Description

There are 2,500 species of palms worldwide, with 11 native to North America. The largest of these, and the only palm tree native to western North America, is the California fan palm. It is also known as the desert palm and the California Washingtonia. It should not be confused with the date palm.
The fan palm has a large, gray unbranched trunk with horizontal lines and vertical fissures. The trunk is 2 to 3 feet in diameter and grows 20 to 60 feet high. The fan palm has numerous evergreen leaves, composed of leaf stalks, 3 to 5 feet long, with hooked spines along the edges.
These fan-shaped leaves spread from around the top of the tree while numerous old, dead leaves hang down against the trunk. For this reason it is sometimes also called the petticoat palm. The dead leaves form a protective area that provides habitat and shelter for many creatures, including birds, insects and small rodents.
In the spring, huge clusters of white, 3-lobed, funnel-shaped flowers, about 1/2 inch long, hang down from leaf bases.
The California fan palm does not produce dates, but does fruit elliptical black "berries" about 1/2 inch in diameter. These berries have a very large, brown seed surrounded by a thin, sweet pulp, which native Americans ate fresh or dried. They also ground the seeds into flour. Hooded orioles and coyotes feast on the seeds as well, aiding the palms' proliferation.
Rare groves of the fan palm can be seen in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, near Palm Springs and Joshua Tree National Park in California, and near Yuma, Arizona.

WE TRIM THE TRUNKS SO THE PALM IS SO AMAZING.

"Dates have been a staple food of the Middle East and parts of South Asia for thousands of years. They are believed to have originated around the Persian Gulf, and have been cultivated since ancient times from Mesopotamia to prehistoric Egypt, possibly as early as 4000 BCE. The Ancient Egyptians used the fruits to be made into date wine, and ate them at harvest. There is archaeological evidence of date cultivation in eastern Arabia in 6000 BCE. (Alvarez-Mon 2006).
There is also archeological evidence of date cultivation in Mehrgarh around 7000 BCE, a Neolithic civilization in western Pakistan. Evidence of cultivation is continually found throughout later civilizations in South Asia, including the Harappan period 2600 to 1900 BCE. (Kenoyer 2005).
In later times, traders spread dates around South and South West Asia, northern Africa, and Spain and Italy. Dates were introduced into Mexico and California by the Spaniards by 1765, around Mission San Ignacio.
A date palm cultivar, known as Judean date palm is renowned for its long-lived orthodox seed, which successfully sprouted after accidental storage for 2000 years.[4] This particular seed was presently reputed to be the oldest viable seed until the sprouting of over 30,000 year old silene stenophylla seeds, but the upper survival time limit of properly stored seeds remains unknown.[5]"

WHAT IS THE WEIGHT OF THIS CANARY PALM TREE? by Gregory Palm Farms (714) 814-8525 or 760-975-4605 OPEN DAILY

Hi!

If you are like me, when I see a giant Canary Island Date Palms towering over parking lots and accenting homes throughout California and often wonder, what does something like weigh?

We have spectacular Canary Palms and other palms
I know you have a busy life and the weight of a palm tree might not be the first question you have in the morning. However, if you see these magnificent trees in person, I am sure that question might be there somewhere.

I asked the man that knows it all... Kevin Gregory. This Canary (that I named Ralph) weighs 16,000 pounds... it's a 16 footer so basically a 1,000 pounds a foot.

A thousand pounds a foot is a smart calculation for any Canary Island Date Palm. Refer to this calculation when considering the location of one of these magnificent trees! CRANE IS A MUST.

I was at a customer's home in Tustin that had a huge Canary Island Palm Tree. The tree was growing on the property line between two homes. One of the neighbors hated it, the other was in love. They asked us to come out and help them with a solution. The customer noted that  another company came out earlier that day and told them that they would remove the tree with 30 men. I did a serious eye roll on that one.

Over  16,000 pounds?  There isn't enough men to move that palm tree.

The palm tree was removed and the feud ended peacefully. We planted a smaller, younger Canary Island Date palm in  better location so  this customer can enjoy the palm once more.
