Washingtonia Filifera- The only native palm to California! AVAILABLE AT Gregory Palm Farms WHERE THE PALMS GROW HAPPY! FULL SERVICE FROM DELIVERY TO INSTALLATION

Hi:
Here we have the California Fan Palm that grows so nicely and slowly in our native state.
A great palm tree that requires little water.

California Desert Fan Palm
Washingtonia Filifera

If you close your eyes and imagine a typical Southern California landscape, chances are that you've pictured at least one palm tree, if not several, rising from the ground. But despite the diversity and ubiquity of palms in the Los Angeles area, only one species—Washingtonia filifera, the California fan palm—is native to California. All of L.A.'s other palm species, from the slender Mexican fan palms that line so many L.A. boulevards to the feather-topped Canary Island date palm, have been imported.

Range

Occur naturally in desert oases in isolated areas of the Sonoran and Mojave deserts of southeastern California, southwestern Arizona, and northern Baja California, Mexico, at elevations between 500 and 1,000 feet. Widely cultivated as an ornamental in Southern California.

Habitat

Moist soils along alkaline streams and in mountain canyons.

Description

There are 2,500 species of palms worldwide, with 11 native to North America. The largest of these, and the only palm tree native to western North America, is the California fan palm. It is also known as the desert palm and the California Washingtonia. It should not be confused with the date palm.
The fan palm has a large, gray unbranched trunk with horizontal lines and vertical fissures. The trunk is 2 to 3 feet in diameter and grows 20 to 60 feet high. The fan palm has numerous evergreen leaves, composed of leaf stalks, 3 to 5 feet long, with hooked spines along the edges.
These fan-shaped leaves spread from around the top of the tree while numerous old, dead leaves hang down against the trunk. For this reason it is sometimes also called the petticoat palm. The dead leaves form a protective area that provides habitat and shelter for many creatures, including birds, insects and small rodents.
In the spring, huge clusters of white, 3-lobed, funnel-shaped flowers, about 1/2 inch long, hang down from leaf bases.
The California fan palm does not produce dates, but does fruit elliptical black "berries" about 1/2 inch in diameter. These berries have a very large, brown seed surrounded by a thin, sweet pulp, which native Americans ate fresh or dried. They also ground the seeds into flour. Hooded orioles and coyotes feast on the seeds as well, aiding the palms' proliferation.
Rare groves of the fan palm can be seen in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, near Palm Springs and Joshua Tree National Park in California, and near Yuma, Arizona.

OOPAH! Go Greek When It Comes To Your Palm Trees! Call us today…714-814-8525 or 760-975-4605 GREGORY PALM FARMS - OPEN DAILY

Fun Fact: The Chamaerops humillis aka the Mediterranean Fan Palm is native to Europe. The work Chamaerops comes from the Greek!

The Mediteranean Fan Palm is a clumping palm tree, growing slowly to 20 feet high, trunks 4 to 5 inches in diameter , covered with fibrous dead leaf petioles; triangular, fan-shaped blue-grey to green leaves 36 to 48 inches long and wide with spiny petioles

It is a shrub-like clumping palm, with several stems growing from a single base. The stems grow slowly and often tightly together, eventually reaching 16-20 feet tall with a trunk diameter of 4-5 inches.

It is a fan palm, with the leaves with a long petiole terminating in a rounded fan of 10-20 leaflets; each leaf is up to 3-4 feet long, with the leaflets 1 - 2 feet long. It also has numerous sharp needle-like spines produced on the leaf stems; these protect the stem growing point from browsing animals. The flowers are born in dense, short clusters at the top of the stems; it is usually (but not invariably) dioecious with male and female flowers on separate plants. The fruit is a brown drupe 1/2 - 3/4 inches long.

Mediterranean Fan Palm Characteristics
Stem/Trunk: Attractive trunk with age, fuzzy material between stubs of cut fronds
Exposure: Full to partial sun
Soil: Amended uniform
Water: Regular, deep soaking 2 times per month during growing season
Growth Rate: 5-15 ft, spread (crown) 5-20 ft; very slow growth rate (requires 10-15 years to achieve 8ft)

Gregory Palm Farms!

Gregory Palm Farms!

Palm Trees are our specialty and installation too!! We have maintenance plans and we guarantee our palms because we have installed them for the best results!!
Palm trees for your front yard, back yard, pool area, office... whatever the location, we have the palms that will make your house a home instantly!!
This property had a great Elm tree but it was right next to the pool. Between all the leaves that fell in the fall and the roots cracking all the concrete, the owner reluctantly agreed that the tree had to go.
So, the question is what do you replace it with? A Canary Island Date Palm, with it's massive truck and prawn span? A King palm, with it's self cleaning trunk and petite stature? A Mediterranean Palm with its multiple trunks and stiff prawns.  Or how about QUEENS, lots of QUEENS AND even a DOUBLE SPECIMEN QUEEN.  They don't pull up the concrete or destroy the plumbing, they sway in the breeze with elegance and grandeur without the maintenance. Queens it is!
Here we are craning in the first Queen, then the second, then the third and then finally, the fourth. All in a row looking so stately. How about the pool? Well, the owner's decided on a beautiful double queen that has immediate shade, gorgeous full palm heads and fat trunks for
a perfect look now!!!
Go to GregoryPalmFarms.com and check out our palms. Pick them out yourself. You won't be disappointed!

Sago Palm FOR A FOCAL POINT IN YOUR YARD OR BUSINESS BY GREGORY PALM FARMS (714)814-8525/760)975-4605 MULTI-HEAD SAGOS

Did You Know?

This very symmetrical plant supports a crown of shiny, dark green leaves on a thick shaggy trunk that is typically about 20 cm (7.9 in) in diameter, sometimes wider. The trunk is very low to subterranean in young plants, but lengthens above ground with age. It can grow into very old specimens with over 20 feet of trunk; however, the plant is very slow-growing and requires about 50–100 years to achieve this height. Trunks can branch multiple times, thus producing multiple heads of leaves
