We are often asked how old a palm tree is. It's really fascinating because some palms are super slow growers while others are faster.

Take for example the Canary Island Date palm, pictured below.

To grow this Canary to 22 foot of heigth, it took 35 years!

Just think what you were doing 35 years ago. What an investment. 

Did you see the Canary Palms in Beverly Hills? They are over 50 years old. 

King Palms! These palms grow a foot and a half to two feet a year!

If you are looking at this 22' king palm? It has been growing for 11 years plus!

If you are looking for a really slow grower, the best is either the  Sable or Chilean Wine Palm. 

Here is a baby Chilean Wine Palm (as in tasty Wine!) that has been growing from seed for 10 years!

They are robust, thick trunk with fronds that are stiff and gorgeous. 

We have a 20' Chilean Wine Palm at the farm and that Palm has been growing for over 50 years!

One of the finest of the dwarf palms, Pygmy Date Palm slowly reaches 6 to 12 feet in height and has an upright or curving, single trunk topped with a dense, full crown of gracefully arching, three-foot-long leaves. The insignificant flower clusters, hidden by the foliage, are present periodically throughout the year and produce small, jet-black dates which ripen to a deep red.  Need something slow growing, unique and drought resistant for your planters? How about little to no maintenance? Check out these rare palms called Elephants foot/ponytail palm or bottle palm! 

Here we finished up one of the planters at one of our recent landscaping jobs and the palm pictured is an Elephants foot palm. What is B and B in the palm and tree world? It means BAG and BALL. 

Okay, so what does that mean? 

If there are very large trees, normally, in transplanting it is easier and safer if the trees are wrapped in plastic or burlap when they are dug.  When we Bag them,  the earth is damp and it preserves the moisture during transportation and planting. It is also actually easier to manoeuvre around planters or buildings to the hole. 

Originally, the bag was a burlap type and burried to decompose. Now, we use plastic to protect the moisture and roots. 

 We have sent many B and B palms to South Carolina and it's easier on the other end to remove them from the trucks. 

The big specimens in boxes, they have to be gigantic boxes. are expensive which translates into more cost for the customer. And, it is better for them to root a bit in the boxes for  awhile. The problem with many boxed specimen is this; Craning them up can rip their roots sending the tree or palm into distress. Many boxed trees have established root systems through the bottom of the boxes. 

Digging, wrapping and out is a better and more successful process in transplanting.
