One of the quickest ways to kill a Phoenix Dactylifera (Date Palm) or a Phoenix Canariensis (Canary Island Date Palm) is to over-water it with poorly draining soil. Such is the case in these pictures below. This Phoenix Dactylifera was properly installed at the customer site with a french drain and properly prepared soil. However, the water level wasn't being monitored by the landscape maintenance personnel and as a result the tree died. More is better? Not in the case of water!
At Gregory Palm Farms, all of our Phoenix Dactylifera and Phoneix Canariensis trees are installed with a french drain to allow for proper watering and draining. However, these drains need to be monitored to make sure that the trees aren't being over-watered and the roots left in standing water as was the case with this tree. It might seem like a lot of work. It's NOT! The landscape maintenance crew are there anyway, they should spot check the pipes. AND MAKE SURE THE PIPE TOPS ARE NOT COVERED!! It takes less than a minute. AND IF YOU WOULD LIKE A MAINTENANCE PROGRAM, GREGORY PALM FARMS DOES THAT AS WELL.
Proper installation with a french drain, watering schedule and appropriate feeding along with monitoring the drainage will insure a healthy growing tree. These trees are very expensive to replace, so proper care and maintenance is critical to keep the trees healthy.
Root ball of an over-watered tree - water didn't drain! So, now it is really stinky with putrid water. The palm literally died from mold and goo.

Standing water in the root area caused this tree to die - make sure the air pipes are installed and are checked for drainage! That's why we put them in!!!

How to Care for Your Sago Palm by Gregory Palm Farms (714) 814-8525/760)975-4605 We have sago palm specimens with double heads! OPEN DAILY
Previously, we talked about how to separate and transplant a sago pup. This is a good time to go over how to properly care for your sago palm. The symmetry of the glossy fronds and the way the zig-zag pattern on the trunk gives it a prehistoric vibe with a tropical twist. They are also so versatile! They not only look good outdoors as decorations for entryways but they also make excellent indoor plants as well due to their slow-growth rate.
Here are some tips below for properly caring for your indoor cycad.
Gregory Palm Farms (714) 814-8525/760)975-4605
Looking for a double headed sago as a focal point to your landscape... we have them!
Looking for matching sagos for a big job... we have them.
Looking to add diversity indoor... we have them.
Care tips for indoor sago palms:
- Give it just the right amount of sun. The key to your sago thriving both indoors (and outdoors!) is how much light it receives. Too much direct sun can burn those pretty green fronds. Partial sun is ideal. I also recommended turning the sago a quarter of a turn every couple of days to make sure the fronds each get their turn in the sun, allowing for them to grow out more evenly.
- Keep it out of high traffic areas! This is beneficial for both you and the sago. The fronds are pretty stiff with a sharp point at the end of the frond. You will get tired super quick after a few brushes with its leaves.
- Watching the watering. Too much water, and your sago will have some rot issues. Only water your sago again when the soil is starting to feel dry. Also, make sure it has good drainage and remove any sitting, leftover water after each watering.
- Fertilize once a month during growing season (spring through fall). Be mindful not to over fertilize your plant as this could result in fertilizer burn, causing yellowing and root damage.
- To prune or not to prune? Trimming your sago's fronds is completely up to you and your personal taste. The cone that grows from the center can be removed as long as its done carefully. Otherwise, if left alone, will just fall off on its own.
- Upgrade to a pot 2 inches bigger than the one it's currently in. When the sago begins to outgrow the pot it's in, it's time to move it to a bigger home. Again, make sure that there is good drainage to prevent rot.

WHY DO THEY CALL PALM SHOOTS ON THE SIDE, PUPS? GREGORY PALM FARMS! (714)814-8525/760)975-4605 OPEN DAILY
Hi!
Gregory Palm Farms here!
WHY DO THEY CALL PALM SHOOTS, PUPS?
IF YOU ARE REFERRING TO PALM PUPS AND NOT THE BARKING KIND, WE CAN HELP!
IF YOU ARE REFERRING TO PALM PUPS, THEY ARE THE SMALL PALMS GROWING AT THE BASE OF THE SAGO PALMS OR DATE PALMS.
Some people love the fullness of the pups around the base of the Sago palm, as shown here.
Others, prefer to have all the pups removed at the time of installation revealing only a textured trunk.
Either way, these Sago Palms are a perfect addition to any landscape and can be a wonderful container palms as well. They are slow growing and have a rich green colored fronds.
Each of those "pups" or small shoots are actually palms. If you plant them, they will grow!

KING PALMS... aka Archontophoenix Cunninghamiana .... HAVE A KING AT THE GREGORY PALM FARMS (714)814-8525/760)975-4605 open daily
Hi!
The King Palm aka Archontophoenix Cunninghamiana.... say that three times fast!
These palms are SELF CLEANING!! THAT'S RIGHT! SELF CLEANING! HOW???
When the old fronds are ready to go, THEY FALL OFF! THAT's right! The old dead fronds fall to the ground and you just toss them away! Or better yet, make a mulch of them.
The trunks are reddish with green new growth. They are really pretty actually.
As the old fronds fall off, a smooth trunk is left....
The canopy from a king is full and lovely!
AND, IF YOU WANT BABY KINGS, the females seed once the tree has about 12' of trunk.
We were asked for these seed pods by a florist. It seems they are used for all sorts of decor.
What is your KING WISH?
Do you have a palm wish?
We can assist you!!
