WHY DO YOU NEED AIR PIPES FOR PALMS? WHAT IS IT CALLED? Gregory Palm Farms (714)343-1962/760)975-4605 WE HAVE PALMS! GET SMART

 Hi!

WHAT ARE AIR PIPES FOR PALMS?

Actually, the air pipes installed on all the Date Palm family trees are called the French Drain.  They consist of a square of piping with four vertical pipes at each corner at a 45 degree angle.  There are a couple of  purposes of the French Drain.

The bottom square pipes are perforated with a type of sock or "condom" over it to prevent dirt and debris from entering the pipe. The vertical pipes are connected to the bottom pipes and work to bring air to the roots for ventilation. These verticals are essential to the health of the palms. We see some landscapers completely covering up to tops as it protrudes from the earth.  We only cover them up when we are backfilling the hole with clean washed sand then they are opened.

The biggest reason is to check the health of your palm. You can do this by simply putting a broom stick  inside and check for standing water. The water should "percolate" and the palm should not be standing in water. If it is, this water will be come stagnant and putrid harming the tree causing mold.

This is date palm literally drowned. The water was putrid and disgusting when we pulled the palm out. The French Drain prevents this from happening.

Why did it happen? The owner did not check the pipes, ever. He was not on a maintenance program so we only found out when the tree started loosing its fronds. His property was at the lowest point of the cal-de-sac and the water literally drained right into the palm hole and on his property. The water did Not go down to the curb  and out to the street.  When we replaced the palm, we also diverted the water away from the new palm and created a better system of drainage then the builder!

Here's the pipes!
