What type of root system does a palm tree have?

  • Palm trees have ‘ fibrous root system.’ The roots of the Palm are not deeply rooted in the soil. Their root system is typically about six feet deep but have tendrils that spread out from there. Those tendrils are the reason the palms don't blow over in a high wind!
  • The roots spread over the soil like a mat and penetrate nearly 36 inches of topsoil and farther. We can even see these roots if the tree is planted in shallow soil.

  •  Ever wonder why the roots are part of the trunk in some palms? It is an indication that the roots have hit bottom so to speak. If you are in a housing tract, the roots could hit the hard pan. The air roots don't hurt the palm, it is their way of growing when the bottom portion is limited! Pretty smart, right!
  •  Palm tree roots have a preference for sandy soil which makes them easier to uproot.
  • If you have clay or rocky soil, dig a larger hole for installation for the root ball and fill it with a combination of sand and soil.
