One of the quickest ways to kill a Phoenix Dactylifera (Date Palm) or a Phoenix Canariensis (Canary Island Date Palm) is to over-water it with poorly draining soil. Such is the case in these pictures below. This Phoenix Dactylifera was properly installed at the customer site with a french drain and properly prepared soil. However, the water level wasn't being monitored by the landscape maintenance personnel and as a result the tree died. More is better? Not in the case of water!

At Gregory Palm Farms, all of our Phoenix Dactylifera and Phoneix Canariensis trees are installed with a french drain to allow for proper watering and draining. However, these drains need to be monitored to make sure that the trees aren't being over-watered and the roots left in standing water as was the case with this tree. It might seem like a lot of work. It's NOT! The landscape maintenance crew are there anyway, they should spot check the pipes. AND MAKE SURE THE PIPE TOPS ARE NOT COVERED!!  It takes less than a minute. AND IF YOU WOULD LIKE A MAINTENANCE PROGRAM, GREGORY PALM FARMS DOES THAT AS WELL.

Proper installation with a french drain, watering schedule and appropriate feeding along with monitoring the drainage will insure a healthy growing tree. These trees are very expensive to replace, so proper care and maintenance is critical to keep the trees healthy.

Root ball of an over-watered tree - water didn't drain! So, now it is really stinky with putrid water. The palm literally died from mold and goo.

Removal of the over-watered tree

Standing water in the root area caused this tree to die - make sure the air pipes are installed and are checked for drainage! That's why we put them in!!!
Clean out all damaged soil and replace with sand.
