Palm of The Week: SAGO PALM! FROM THE GREGORY PALM FARMS

Sago Palm aka Cycas revoluta
is a species of gymnosperm in the family Cycadaceae, native to southern Japan including the Ryukyu Islands. It is one of several species used for the production of sago, as well as an ornamental plant.

This very symmetrical plant supports a crown of shiny, dark green leaves on a thick shaggy trunk that is typically about 20 cm in diameter, sometimes wider.
The trunk is very low to subterranean in young plants, but lengthens above ground with age. It can grow into very old specimens with 20 feet of trunk; however, the plant is very slow-growing and requires about 50–100 years to achieve this height.
Trunks can branch multiple times, thus producing multiple heads of leaves.

Jelly Palm Fun

Do More With Your Palm

Make delicious Pindo Palm Jelly!

Butia capitata, also known as Jelly Palm or Pindo Palm, is a palm native to ArgentinaBrazilUruguay and Gregory Palm Farms it as well. Ripe fruit are about the size of large cherry, and yellowish/orange in color, but can also include a blush towards the tip. The taste is a mixture of pineappleapricot, and vanilla. Taste can vary depending on soil conditions, and the tastes of applepineapple, and banana together is also common. It is tart and sweet at the same time, with a flesh similar to a loquat, but slightly more fibrous.
Palm Fruit Jelly

3 quarts ripe palm fruit
6 cups water

Simmer fruit in the water in a large saucepan until fruit is softened, about 30 minutes, crushing fruit with a potato masher as it cooks to release juices.

Strain fruit through several layers of cheesecloth, discard fruit, measure juice collected.

In a large stainless steel saucepan mix:

5-1/2 cups fruit juice
1 box powdered pectin (Sure Jel)

Bring mixture to a boil over high heat. When liquid reaches a full, rolling boil add all at once...

7-1/2 cups sugar

Bring back to a full, rolling boil and boil, stirring constantly, for one minute. Remove from heat and fill hot, sterilized half pint jelly jars to within 1/4 inch of the rim. Tighten hot, sterilized lids and rings on to fingertip tightness.

Process jars in a boiling water bath... ensure jars are completely covered with water, bring water to a boil, reduce heat to a gentle boil and boil, covered, for 10 minutes. After processing, remove jars from water using a jar lifter and set on a folded dish towel or cooling rack on the counter to cool and to seal.

Hello and Welcome to Our Family

At Gregory Palm Farms, LLC. our goal is to produce the very best palms suitable for the Southern California area.

We are fourth generation farmers who live to grow our own products and love what we do. We pride ourselves in the fact that all of our palm trees are California grown and are therefore, more suitable to the environments we market. Our family owns and operates several farms in California, and have set up our central location in Orange, Orange County. In Orange, we are able to operate the business, and show a large variety of our field grown stock without having to travel the distance to our growing grounds.

The Pauma Valley farm is our largest growing location of palms, and these palms can weather conditions down to 20 degrees and handle snow from Mt. Palomar a few weeks out of the year. With these varying temperatures, we can supply cold, hardy palm trees to the Northwestern and Southeast states. Please call today for our latest palm inventory and specials!!
