How to Plant a Canary Island Date Palm Gregory Palm Farms (714) 814-8525

How To Plant a Canary Palm Tree, for the BEST results!!

1.   Choose a wide area that receives direct sunlight for planting. Adult Canary Island date palms can reach heights of 60 feet or more, with fronds 18 feet long. There should be at least a 6- to 7-foot radius of space around the palm when planted.

2

Dig a hole about 1 foot deeper and wider than the root ball of the potted palm tree. Fill the bottom of the hole with fertile, well-drained soil and pat it down. Canary Island date palms tolerate a wide variety of well-drained soil, but will grow faster in rich, fertile soil. Water the soil at the bottom of the hole and allow it to drain and to settle. Place the root ball of the palm into the hole. Fill in the sides around the roots with soil and pat it down firmly.

3

Water the soil around the newly planted Canary Island date palm tree until it is thoroughly soaked. Water the newly planted tree once every couple of days as soon as the surface of the soil is dry to the touch. After two to three weeks, the roots of the palm tree should be established, and the tree can then be watered once a week in dry weather. Adult date palms can survive very dry weather, but younger and newly planted palms need regular watering to do well.

4

Cover a 3-foot radius around the trunk in washed sand. It will help to retain moisture for the newly planted tree.

5

Fertilize the newly planted palm with slow-release granular 3-1-3 fertilizer. Mix 2 teaspoons of the fertilizer into the top 2 inches of soil around the trunk of the tree every four months during the growing season.
