Gregory Palm Farms was recently awarded the contract to deliver and install 190+ palm trees
to the new Windset Farms greenhouse in Santa Maria, CA. This was a a Super-Sized job that had to be done in 2 weeks. Gregory Palms stepped up and completed the job in 10 days.

Windset Farms primary goal when building these new facilities was to use the latest technology
to reduce their environmental footprint and leverage sustainability options that didn't exist even
five years ago.

Gregory Palm Farms was proud to be part of that effort in providing USDA inspected and certified palm trees for this job that consisted of Windmill Palms, Mexican Fan Palms, Pygmy Date Palms, Mediterranean Fan Palms and Phoenix Dactylifera's.

Evergreen Palm trees!

Yesterday, a wonderful client from Long Beach came in to look at some King palms and ended up with something totally different. She was looking for something with a rich green color, like an evergreen. Some of the more tropical palms that she initially liked werent as vibrant as she thought, mainly beacuse of the hot summer weathering the palms.

We took a walk around the entire farm, scounting and searching for what she invisioned. The palms that caught her eye was the Mediteranean fan, Mexican, and the Sago. Other palms that stay evergreen are the Canary Island date palm, Reclinata palm, and the Pygmy date palm.

The Sago palm won her over and she was so excited for her new palms. She went with this Specimen Sago palm and another smaller sago. These palms are going to liven up the yard and give it a fresh new look!

Pasadena Historical Home Gets a Palm Tree Upgrade

Gregory Palm Farms was recently awarded the contract to upgrade this historical house in Pasadena.

First we removed a large pine tree in the front yard and replaced it with a beautiful, mature Canary Island Date Palm Tree. We then added some Kentia Palms and Sagos to the front of the house and then put Fan Palms and Triangle Palms in the backyard.

Fruit of summer!

The fog is moving on and the sun is coming back to greet us today here at the farm! Summer weather is blooming with sunshine and heat, just the ticket for our palms. The roots grow deeper in the summer, the leaves fill out, and the seeds ripen for for the next planting season.

Speaking of seeds ripening, did you know you can eat a lot of the dates you see on palms? Most of them around here I wouldn't eat because they just aren't that sweet to my tastes buds but, the Butia Capitata or commonly known as the Jelly palm I would! These palms are gorgeous in there own right and are a slower growing palm with long curly leaves that have a nice blue/green hue to them. They produce seeds which then ripens into these tasty Jelly palm fruits!

If you hadn't tried them....just wait until the seeds get that orange and red coloration on them and then YUMMMM!! The taste of peach and strawberry come to mind when I bite into one! Juicy and firm, don't forget to watch out for that seed!

The Gregory family has made jelly out of this Jelly palm and its one for the books. A little pectin, some sugar, and a whole bunch of pitted Butia palms fruits. Its definitely something to try :)

Today I was walking around the farm and the Blue Hesper palm caught my eye! This palm is a famous hardy blue palm from Mexico. These little beauties are a wonderful accent to any landscape, they are slow growing, easy to maintain, have a nice full head of Blueish colored fan leaves and are perfect for our Southern California environment. They can be planted in a sunny spot in the garden or even partial shade, well drained soil is a must! The palm can withstand -10 degree Celsius winters when mature and even droughts!

Palm Tree Pruning!!

Well its that time of year when the palms are growing happily and loosing those old leaves from last season! If you are a homeowner or landscaper and you are trimming your palms yourselves or want to give your trimmers some advice, here are some helpful tips on how to prune your palms -

Most palm trees shed their fronds naturally, but other palms drop the fronds after some time. When it is necessary to prune the palm trees, never remove fronds that do not hang below a line parallel to the ground.

When not pruning palms correctly, palms can reduce their vigor, transmit diseases, reduce their health nutritionally, affect cold hardiness and lower their tolerance to handle wind if over trimmed. The best advice on what to trim on palm trees is this- Remove only badly damaged or dead fronds, also remove new flower shoots and/or seeds. This way you never over trim your palm tree and will have a nice looking head of fronds.

"Palm trees produce one leaf at a time, and once a full crown of leaves is achieved in mature individual,(for some palms this is just 4-5 leaves, while other species, this can be over 120 leaves) every new leaf formed is followed by an old leaf dying. This number, unique to each palms, is the ideal number of leaves for that palm to have to grow optimally. Any less leaves than that number and the palm will grow sub- optimally, or slower. Sub- optimal numbers of fronds can weaken a palm too, and make it more vulnerable to wind damage, parasites and fatal infections.

Green palm leaves, or fronds, are the palms sole source of food (from photosynthesis). Fertilizer is NOT food, but a source of micro nutrients that the palms uses, along with water and sunlight to make its food. When green leaves are removed, the palm cannot make the ideal amount of food it needs to survive, Fortunately most palms are quite tolerant of this 'abuse' and can deal with suboptimal amounts of green leaves...up to a point." Also, when trimming you palm be vary wary of Palm Trees trunks and avoid anything that you think can damage the trunks. If you damage the inner soft area of the trunk while pruning there is a good chance the damage will not heal when mature.

1. Make sure to clean your tools before pruning with a little bleach and water, make sure to wipe shears clean with dry towel before use. You can use short shears, long armed tree shears, or extend able tree cutters for those hard to reach branches. (Never pull on a frond to finish off the trim, this will rip the stem and create a open sore.)

2. If palms fronds are yellow, brown or broken prune them off along the trunk side (do not dig into the palm).

3. Make sure to remove loose leftover boots (parts of fronds that are attached to the trunk after trimming).

4. Care of palms include removing palm flower and fruit stalks. When a palm produces fruits it takes strength away from the tree. Also, fruits provide food for pests, are messy and stain concrete surfaces, and will sometimes germinate in undesired areas of your landscape.

Always make sure to give your palms plenty of water along with drainage and fertilizer to keep your palm green and happy :)

Just the other day Gregory Palm farms went out to remove a Canary Island date palm for a client of ours who was having trouble with the palm and needed to replace it with a slower growing one.

We set the Fogel's up with a Specimen Phoenix Ruplicola to replace the large Canary! This palm was suitable for the association and also the nieghbors view of the ocean. Ruplicola's are a slower growing palm of the Phoenix family and only get 20' high. These are a great option if you want the look of a Canary but, nothing too big!

Date palms!

Phoenix Dactylifera or Date palms are one of the most well known and sought after palm trees, not only for there dates but for here look as well. You are probably used to seeing the ""dates" in the stores that are sweet and tasty, along with date shakes!! Date palms are very adaptable to different growing conditions, from hot , dry desserts, to wet tropics, to cold temperature regions, it only produces edible date in the extreme hot environments. Kentia palms!!

I was taking a walk around the palm farm this morning and was so impressed by our gorgeous Kentia palms! They have such an elegant look with the soft feathery leaves, and rich green and tan trunk.

If you are not familiar with this palm here is some additional information to get you started:

Howea Forsteriana, otherwise known as the "Kentia Palm" or "Sentry Palm" is a moderatly slow growing single trunked tropical palm. The trunk gets about 6'' in diameter, is swollen at the base, with spaced rings, and has a green to tan coloration when at maturity. The leaf crown of the mature palms is usually 20 feet wide and 12 to 15 feet tall. The Kentia is a friendly palm in that it has no thorns or harsh leaves to disrupt your garden or landscape. They can be a full sun and also shade palm, coastal or inland as well.

You can grow them in pots, planters, open spaces and even grow them indoor!

Miniature (Faux) Canary Island Palm Trees

Canary Island Palm trees with their stately height, girth and canopy, these massive trees are the ultimate in "statement" palms.

Because of their size and popularity, they can be expensive and costly to install.

Gregory Palms has designed a scaled-down, miniature (faux) version of the Canary Island Palm tree which are actually Phoenix Roebelenii trees. (same family as the Canary Island)

Mexican Fan Palm Trees - Washingtonia Robusta

The Mexican Fan Palm Tree, scientifically named as Washingtonia Robusta belong to Arecaceae Family. The temperature recommended for the growth of this tree is 20 degree F. This palm requires full sun for its growth and is widely available in North Mexico. It also requires regular supply of water and the propagation of is done through seeds.

In contrast to California Fan palm, the Mexican tree is taller and thinner. This palm is inexpensive and can be used for landscaping. The maintenance of this tree requires a lot of care. This is because the dead leaves need to be trimmed regularly.

These trees also bears fruit that is round and small, having small and round red shiny seeds. The size of the fruit is less than an inch. This tree can grow up to the height of 100 feet and can grow well in the cold weather. The special care is suggested for the Mexican Fan which starts when you initially sow the seeds and continues till it get fully matures.

You must sow the seed in well drained soil. For the plantation of this plant the soil used must be alkaline in nature. The soil can be checked properly by the pH testing kit. This tree is very slow in its growth and proper water supply is needed for its growth. The fertilization is also needed for the good growth of the tree. The Mexican Fan has the potential to absorb the nutrients from the fertilizers. If the supply of nitrogen is excessive in the fertilizer then it can increases the growth of the tree but the tree may lack in potassium.

This tree can be attacked by fungus and mites. It can be cured by the spray of fungicide. This Fan Palm should be exposed properly to the sunlight and the germination of the seed is done in couple of days if the seeds are fresh.

In case the seed of this plant is big, then you need to plant the seed in the single pot. This tree needs healthy nutrients during the growing period. There is one specimen of Mexican Fan palm tree known as hernaphrodites which can produce fruit.

The trunk of this tree is ringed very well with the leaf-shaped scales. The Mexican Fan Palm Trees possess orange- pink flowers. This tree bears sweet and tasty fruit, having same taste as dates. The fruit has blackberry color.

This palm tree gives very nice and beautiful look to the landscapes. The temperature above 20F goes well with the growth of the palm tree, but when it goes under 23F can cause damage to the leaves. This palm tree does not require much maintenance but trimming of leaves should be done on yearly basis.

How to Care for Pygmy Date Palms - Phoenix Roebelenii

The Pygmy Date Palm (Phoenix Roebelenii) is usually referred to as the miniature date palm, Robellini Palm, Miniature Date Palm. As a matter of fact, the specie is native to Southern China and is one of the most widely used landscape palms in the United States of America. Its small stature, slow growth, easy care and graceful crown have made it a popular accent plant in tropical settings. This breed of palm trees is one of the most adaptable palms for growing containers.

Description
Its height is 6 - 12 feet, with a spread of 6 - 10 feet. Its leaves are usually 8 - 12 inches long. In terms of range, the Pygmy Date Palm is not native to North America. It is rather native to northern Laos, Vietnam, and southern China. The Palm has a slender trunk with old leaf scars. Reaching almost 4 feet in length, bright green leaves grow from the top of the trunk. Its arching stems are covered with 4 - 5 inch leaflets. The palm tree has stiff roots that easily break. It also produces creamy flowers that are followed by black dates.

General Care Tips
The pygmy palm is tough, and well conditioned for a tropical species. It is capable of withstanding temperatures slightly below freezing without suffering any damage; it makes a good candidate in zones 10 and 11. The cultural requirement most often neglected with this species is its moisture needs. This is because it is thirsty and needs constant and adequate water, sometimes capable of withstanding occasional flooding. It needs full sun and slightly acidic soil to thrive. If sufficient light is provided, it serves as an excellent choice for indoor growing.

Cultivation
The Pygmy Palm requires full sun to partial shade to develop. It can tolerate temperatures as low as 20â,,?. It can grow up to 10 feet tall and can adapt to all kinds of soils. It can tolerate cold conditions as low as 20â,,? when they are mature enough. The Pygmy Palm is also drought tolerant but thrives better in moist and well drained soils.

This breed of palm looks very graceful when planted in a group of 3 to 5 specimens. Just as has been previously stated, although it cherishes full sunlight it can also still grow in partial shade. In fact, the Pygmy Palm is a very popular indoor palm tree because it can thrive excellently well in any kind of container. It is used for designing deck or entry ways.

Pygmy Date Palm Fertilization
It is recommended that the Pygmy Date Palm should be fertilized 3 times a year during hot months with a fertilizer which contains magnesium and manganese.

Pygmy Date Palm Propagation
Because it takes around 3 - 4 months to germinate, the best conditions for germination would be warm, moist soil with sufficient shade which would protect the young seedlings from direct sunlight. This is where most farmers or people who desire to plant this very specie make the most mistakes.

Gregory Palms Does the Impossible Dream for Malibu Canyon Custom Home

Malibu Canyon known for it's custom homes, incredible ocean views and winding roads. But that didn't stop Gregory Palms from delivering and installing a variety of palm trees to this custom Malibu Canyon home.

The owner of this custom home had called several different landscape contractors, but none of them wanted to attempt to move all the trees up a narrow, 1.5 mile winding road.

Gregory Palms stepped up and said YES!

This project included large Canary Island Palms, Washingtonia Palms, Sago Palms and Triangle Palms.

Due to the location and the long, winding road, the palm trees had to be off-loaded from the semi-trucks onto smaller trucks for the 1.5 mile ride up the small, winding road. Because of the size and weight of the larger trees, the smaller truck need to be pulled up the hill with a tractor.

The Windmill palm makes a great accent which fits well into small areas like courtyards and entries. It is a tough plant and survives in both hot & cold urban landscapes and even thrives in Northern California and Washington climates.

Windmill palm is perfect for containers if care is taken that they are well drained. It is very attractive planted in groves and groupings especially when plants of different heights are staggered in irregular patterns.

Date Palms are probably the second most well-known palm after the coconut, and this palm produces dates. However, despite this palm being extremely adaptable to differing growing conditions, from hot, dry deserts, to wet tropics, and thru to cold-temperate regions, it will only produce dates in the hot, dry climates. It is also very salt-tolerant, making it good for coastal planting.

Excellent Container Plant - Sago Palm (Cycas Revoluta)

The Cycas Revoluta, or commonly known as the Sago Palm, is a wonderful plant for both indoor and outdoor use. It looks great in the shrub border or as an accent on an expanse of lawn or near the patio. Use in entryways or in rock and sand gardens.

It mixes well with palms and combines well with border grass, podocarpus and camellias. The Sago Palm makes an excellent container plant for use outdoors and in the home.

The Sago Palm tall trunk on older specimens, grows 8-10in diameter. It is more fern-like when small and produces offsets at base.

It grows in full sun or partial shade and require a well prepared, non-alkaline soil with good drainage. Once established, the Sago Palm is fairly drought tolerant, but still requires regular watering. The Sago Palm is a slow growing palm with up to 10 ft fronds spread 3-6 ft.

Rare Phoenix rupicola - Cliff Date Palms - Now Available

Gregory Palm Farms has some rare Phoenix rupicola palms also known as Cliff Date Palms.

The Cliff Date Palm is a species of flowering plant in the Palm family, native to the mountainous forests of India and Bhutan, usually occurring on cliffs, hillsides and similar terrain. It has long, arching, bright green leaves which are self-cleaning. The fronds are on an upright axis that hand as the tree matures. Will tolerate full sun when mature.

Typical trees usually only reach a height of about 30 feet, but some hybrids have been noted at over 70 feet.

Cliff Date Palm Characteristics
Stem/Trunk	Single, smooth, thin trunk, which gives it a much neater appearance than other species of Phoenix.

Growing Pygmy Date Palms in Southern California

One of the finest of the dwarf palms, Pygmy Date Palm slowly reaches 6 to 12 feet in height and has an upright or curving, single trunk topped with a dense, full crown of gracefully arching, three-foot-long leaves. The insignificant flower clusters, hidden by the foliage, are present periodically throughout the year and produce small, jet-black dates which ripen to a deep red.

Pygmy Date Palm is quite popular as a specimen planting or in containers, especially attractive at poolside. It is usually used as a single specimen although it is also effective in groups of three or more.

The Mediteranean Fan Palm is a clumping palm tree, growing slowly to 20 feet high, trunks 4 to 5 inches in diameter , covered with fibrous dead leaf petioles; triangular, fan-shaped blue-grey to green leaves 36 to 48 inches long and wide with spiny petioles

It is a shrub-like clumping palm, with several stems growing from a single base. The stems grow slowly and often tightly together, eventually reaching 16-20 feet tall with a trunk diameter of 4-5 inches.

It is a fan palm, with the leaves with a long petiole terminating in a rounded fan of 10-20 leaflets; each leaf is up to 3-4 feet long, with the leaflets 1 - 2 feet long. It also has numerous sharp needle-like spines produced on the leaf stems; these protect the stem growing point from browsing animals. The flowers are born in dense, short clusters at the top of the stems; it is usually (but not invariably) dioecious with male and female flowers on separate plants. The fruit is a brown drupe 1/2 - 3/4 inches long.

This job required a large crane to remove the trees from the truck and move them into position.
